Nowadays, the principles of ergonomics are changing the way we work. Keyboards, in particular, are being redesigned with ergonomics in mind. To minimize unnecessary wrist movement, some of these compact, ergonomic keyboards do not have a numpad on them. If you happen to have one of these compact ergonomic keyboards, and you want the numpad capability that you are already used to, you may want to emulate the numpad on the keyboard. Here's how:
First, you need to install AutoHotkey. If you have not done so, read this post and follow the steps outlined. The installation will just take a minute or two from start to finish. Come back to this page once you're done installing AutoHotkey.
How to Create Your Script
Now its time to create your script. Open notepad then copy and paste the following script:
; AutoHotkey Version: 1.x
; Language: English
; Platform: Win9x/NT/Win7/8/10
; Author: Eeann16;
; Script Function:
; Template script (you can customize this template by editing "ShellNewTemplate.ahk" in your Windows folder)
#NoEnv ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases.
SendMode Input ; Recommended for new scripts due to its superior speed and reliability.
SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir% ; Ensures a consistent starting directory.
` & n::send 1
` & m::send 2
` & ,::send 3
` & h::send 4
` & j::send 5
` & k::send 6
` & y::send 7
` & u::send 8
` & i::send 9
` & Space::send 0
Save the script by naming it, making sure to change the file extension from .txt to .ahk as this is an AutoHotkey script file.
Run the Script.
Now run the script by double clicking the file. You should see another green icon in the system tray with the name you gave the script file.
How to Emulate the Numpad on the Keyboard
With the script running, you can emulate the numpad on the keyboard when the tilde key (`) is pressed. The letter J with its tactile marker will serve as the numerical character 5. Just like typing numbers on the numpad, this is where you will hold your middle finger. All other numbers follow the same positions on the numpad. Spacebar is zero.
